Traffic Safety Town
The program was implemented at all Pottstown School District Elementary schools totaling 4 schools and all students became "Traffic Safety Captains" at the end by receiving a hat and certificate.
Traffic Safety Town is an interactive streetscape for third grade students. The program teaches students how to safely navigate the streets on foot, bicycle or in a car, through the learning of a variety of concepts, such as identifying street signs, individual road responsibilities, right-of-way concepts and the importance of signaling. With assistance from local Police Department, school staff and administration as champions and stakeholders for the program, the goal is to provide students with the resources and encouragement needed to bike and walk so that they maintain the activity after the program is complete.
The program consists of one 30-40 minute session for third grade students, similar to a school assembly. After completing this program, students will be able to:
Identify a bike as a legal vehicle and identify safe and unsafe bicycle behaviors
Identify a pedestrian as a person walking on the sidewalk or street
Identify and define the meaning of the terms vulnerable as well as right-of-way
Identify the rules of the road for multiple modes of transportation
Demonstrate proper understanding of traffic signs and signals
